Is cinnamon bad for cats?

Cinnamon has an established place in the world of cooking and baking. But should cinnamon-loving pet owners be worried about the health implications of this sweet spice? Cinnamon is a natural source of the enzyme cinnamaldehyde, a member of the class of compounds known as arylalkanoic acid, which can cause liver and kidney damage if it's consumed in high amounts.

As a general rule, this enzyme is only found in the bark of trees (like cinnamon). So if a pet owner ingests cinnamon, they are unlikely to suffer from cinnamaldehyde poisoning. However, if cinnamon is added to cat food, that could lead to toxic levels of the compound in the food. According to the National Research Council, exposure to a high level of arylalkanoic acid in cat food can cause liver damage. This is why it's very important to look out for ingredients that may contain cinnamon in food products for cats.
