Dog bed for great pyrenees

I am looking for a bed for my great pyrenees. He is 12 years old and currently sleeps on a box (couch). I have a bed from the previous owners of our house and it works for the smaller dog but I cannot use it for my larger one.

I want something he can sleep on but I want it to be very large. I was thinking of a kennel bed or something similar that has a thick, padded bottom. He likes a very soft bed to sleep on but we have to keep him clean and it is hard for him to be in a kennel type of environment. I know that a crate is probably not good for him in the long run but I would just use it to put him down for a nap.

I am looking for a bed that is big enough for him to have plenty of room but he can't get out of it easily. Is there anything like that out there? I know this might not be the best option but I don't know what else I can do.

If the couch is too soft for his comfort, consider one of those "soft beds" with a thick mattress/pad on top. I have a similar one for my mastiffs, which sleep fine on it.

They do tend to prefer not to sleep in them because they have the choice to get out of it or even crawl out.

I like the kennel bed with the lid...if you keep the lid closed, he would be fine in it...but if you open the lid, he could escape.

I'm not sure if a crate would work, because when I first used it, I had a large dog, and it was hard for him to go into it. It worked ok for small dogs, but not so well for larger dogs.

It's a good idea to have the bed elevated to make it easier for him to get into and out of it.

My suggestion is to get a crate, make sure it is elevated. Put a towel on it so he can't get his paws on the bottom of the crate (and if you want to be able to use it with him as a crate too, use a towel under the crate), and crate him for a nap.

Crate training is one of the best things you can do for your dog. If you are thinking that he is "too big for it" then just crate train him. I've owned big dogs all my life, and they were NEVER too big for a crate. The only thing I would say is that it may not be good for a young dog to be in a crate by himself. I'd do the crate for naps only, maybe with some "training treats" to "teach" him to "stay". After he's had his "crash naps" for a week or so, then move him to the house. But he must know the rules of the house and be trained with a recall command so he'll get it.

I'd also recommend having him on a routine. I crate mine at night, and in the morning, I let him out for breakfast, and have him take a break when he's finished. I don't want him to get too fat though. We have a very active family, and I'd hate for him to be too fat! So make sure he gets walks (or any activity he enjoys) while he's in there, and let him play with his toys too.

You have to remember that crates/kennels are basically prison for dogs. They should never be used as permanent housing. That's the whole point.

I do recommend having your dog in a crate at night though, as he would have an easier time getting up/down, and it also makes him think he's the boss, as well as making him "safe" at night.

I don't know how big your dog is, but you can go to any local pet store to check out their products. I'm sure they have something in their "house products" section that will work well for him.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely give a kennel bed a try. I just hope it's not too big for him. I was thinking of something like this:

If he can get out, it would be great. The one that is a little bigger than that is not going to be big enough for me. This is what I was looking at:

I am trying to find one of those that will not get out of. I was thinking that I would get it for the big one and maybe use it for both of them? I have been trying to find one with the lid that has a latch that would be easier for him to get into and out of. I have not been able to find one of those though.

If he can get out, it would be great. The one that
