## A COLUMN THAT STARTED IT ALL

The first sportswriter I ever read was Michael Barone. I learned everything I know about writing from Michael Barone. His book You Can't Make This Up was the first book I ever read that told you that writing is a craft, not just a profession. The book showed me a whole new world. Michael was writing in 1982, a time when sports writing really hadn't taken off yet. So it wasn't as easy to be a sportswriter back then. Michael was just breaking into the game, and today he's probably the most well-known writer in sports.

A typical column looks like this. It's a brief rundown of a bunch of random topics. And you know, sometimes he writes about politics. It's good stuff. Some of Michael's best writing is in his book Let Me Finish, and his column "My Word" from The American Prospect is probably the best I've ever read. I could read an entire column from this guy.

So when I first saw this book, I thought it was an amazing idea. Michael should write a book that summarizes all the most important topics about sports that every sports fan needs to know about. After reading the book, I realized how truly great this idea is. He takes something you can't make up—a sport—and makes it understandable. How many times can you learn about the history of a sport? Or how to write a good college basketball team? Or how to analyze a sports video? You can't learn about any of that in school. This book can fill in all those important gaps, and make you a smarter sports fan.

He does that by discussing important subjects in sports: race, gender, class, education, government, and so on. But what makes the book so interesting is his ability to explain complicated subjects in ways that are easy to understand. This guy can write about sports without talking about sports. Or make complicated subjects about sports sound like they should be easy to understand. I don't know if that's because he's incredibly smart, or if it's just luck, but it's amazing.

As a book, this is an incredible idea. It would be much harder to write a book like this, because he would need to explain topics that aren't necessarily sports topics. So it's an incredible accomplishment. He makes sports incredibly accessible, by making the complicated interesting, and the difficult understandable. I can't wait to read it.
